An innate colorist with an intuitive sense for dynamic composition, Dana Crossan’s work is richly grounded in broad swathes of boldly placed pigment. Her color range reflects an ever-shifting emotional palate, from vibrant reds and yellows to swollen, stormy, fathomless purples. The energy of Crossan’s gestures is manifest in every stroke, unquestionably impulsive yet never misplaced. In addition, her work is typically marked with cryptic inscriptions — sometimes legible, sometimes not — often hinting at deeply private agendas and experiences, a kind of automatic writing that simultaneously punctuates and melds with her chromatic exertions, another form of primal mark-making.
