2016 Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Honor winner Julia Sarcone-Roach shows the original artwork from her books Subway Story, The Bear Ate Your Sandwich, The Secret Plan, Incredible Inventions and Excellent Ed in the Youth wing of the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central location.
“Humor and inspiration can be found in the areas where wildlife and the world of people overlap. Maybe it’s a subway car swimming with fish, an unnoticed bear standing on a street corner, or an elephant building a pillow fort; the things that are out-of-place are often the most interesting.”
A city is endlessly interesting for creatures of all sizes. Observing the city from new perspectives inspires both the story and art of these books. If I was a bear, where would I climb and what would I eat? What would I hear if I was a subway car deep in a tunnel? Ideas begin as questions, doodles, or scraps in sketchbooks, grow into books and projects.
In addition Julia’s book “Subway Story”, based on the true story of 1960’s-era subway cars that are now being used to create artificial reefs in the Atlantic, shares it’s subject matter with the Brooklyn Public Library’s mural featuring Stephen Mallon’s series American Reclamation: Next Stop Atlantic. Both work take a unique and expressive look at Ecology and New York History inspired by the Eco-conscious efforts of inspired New Yorkers. Julia’s “stunningly illustrated book is sure to delight scuba diving historians and kids alike”.
